Stinging pests like wasps, yellowjackets, and hornets pose serious health risks due to their painful stings and aggressive nature. Their presence can discourage outdoor activities and lead to severe allergic reactions.
Yellowjackets (Vespula spp.)
Aggressive wasps mistaken for bees due to similar size and coloration. Build nests in the ground, wall voids, or under eaves using chewed wood fibers. Highly territorial, especially in late summer when food is scarce.
Paper Wasps (Polistes spp.)
Less aggressive but will sting if threatened. Recognizable by open, umbrella-shaped nests under eaves, in attics, or beneath decks.
Bald-Faced Hornets (Dolichovespula maculata)
A type of yellowjacket with black and white coloring. Build large, enclosed paper nests in trees or on buildings. Their sting is particularly painful, and they attack in swarms if disturbed.
Nests:
Seal Entry Points: Inspect the building for gaps, cracks, and holes in the exterior walls that pests can use to enter.
Keep Food Secure: Store food in airtight containers, and clean up spills and crumbs immediately. Don’t leave pet food out overnight.
Eliminate Clutter: Pests thrive in cluttered environments where they can find hiding spots and nesting materials. Keep areas tidy, especially basements, attics, and storage rooms.
Maintain Landscaping: Trim back trees, shrubs, and dead plant matter that touch your building, as these can provide pathways for pests to enter. Keep firewood and debris away from your building.
