Common

Birds

Birds such as pigeons, Northern Flickers, Mud Swallows, and House Sparrows can damage buildings with their nesting habits and droppings, leading to structural and health concerns. Droppings can harbor fungi causing diseases like histoplasmosis, and nests can attract mites or beetles.

Common Species

Pigeon (Columba livia)

Nest on building ledges, rooftops, under eaves, and in abandoned structures. Their droppings are acidic, corroding metal and stone, causing structural damage. Pigeons are carriers of diseases like psittacosis.

House Sparrow (Passer domesticus)

Nest in roof voids, gutters, vents, or attics using twigs and litter. Nests can block drainage systems, cause water damage, or create fire hazards near electrical components. They are aggressive toward native species.

Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus)

A type of woodpecker that nests by excavating holes in wooden structures like siding, eaves, or utility poles. Their drilling can cause significant structural damage and create noise disturbances. The holes they create may also allow water intrusion and provide entry points for other pests.

Mud Swallows

  • Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica) and Cliff Swallow (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota)

Mud swallows build nests made of mud pellets on building exteriors, especially under eaves, overhangs, and bridges. These nests can deface and damage property surfaces. Accumulated droppings below nesting sites pose health risks and sanitation issues. Large colonies can create significant noise and may attract secondary pests.

Risk & Danger

can cause a variety of problems, including:

Signs of Infestation

  • Nests:
    • Locations: Ledges, gutters, vents, roof voids.
    • Materials: Twigs, leaves, feathers, debris.
    • Hazards: Clogged drainage, blocked ventilation, fire risks.
  • Droppings:
    • Accumulation: On walkways, windowsills, balconies, rooftops.
    • Damage: Corrode metal, damage materials, lead to costly repairs.
    • Health Risks: Harbor fungi and bacteria.
  • Increased Activity:
    • Bird Presence: Large flocks or groups around the property.
    • Noise: Especially in early morning or dusk.
    • Debris: Feathers, nesting materials scattered around.

Prevention Tips

Seal Entry Points: Inspect the building for gaps, cracks, and holes in the exterior walls that pests can use to enter.

Keep Food Secure: Store food in airtight containers, and clean up spills and crumbs immediately. Don’t leave pet food out overnight.

Eliminate Clutter: Pests thrive in cluttered environments where they can find hiding spots and nesting materials. Keep areas tidy, especially basements, attics, and storage rooms.

Maintain Landscaping: Trim back trees, shrubs, and dead plant matter that touch your building, as these can provide pathways for pests to enter. Keep firewood and debris away from your building.
