Spiders

Spiders are common household invaders that can range from harmless web-spinners to venomous species that pose potential health risks. While they play a crucial role in controlling insect populations, their presence indoors is often unwelcome.

Common Species

Funnel Weaver Spider (Family Agelenidae)

Funnel weaver spiders are common arachnids known for constructing horizontal, sheet-like webs with a characteristic funnel-shaped retreat where the spider hides. These webs are often found in grass, shrubs, and sometimes indoors near windows, basements, or crawl spaces. Funnel weavers are typically brown with longitudinal stripes on their cephalothorax and have long legs adapted for quick movement. They feed on small insects and are generally harmless to humans.

Black Widow Spider (Latrodectus mactans, Pictured above)

Recognizable by the distinctive red hourglass marking on its abdomen, the black widow is venomous and can deliver a painful bite that may cause severe symptoms in humans. They are typically found in dark, undisturbed places like garages, woodpiles, or under outdoor furniture.

Wolf Spider (Family Lycosidae, Pictured on the left)

These large, hairy spiders are ground-dwelling hunters that don’t spin webs to catch prey. They are often found in basements or near windows and doors, actively hunting insects at night. Despite their intimidating appearance, wolf spider bites are rare and typically not dangerous.

Risk & Danger

can cause a variety of problems, including:

Signs of Infestation

Spider infestations can be identified through various signs around the home:

  • Webs: The most common indicator is the presence of webs in corners of rooms, basements, attics, and garages. House spiders spin tangled webs to catch prey, and an increase in webs may indicate abundant food sources like insects.
  • Sightings: Some species, such as wolf spiders, don't spin webs but instead roam indoors. Seeing large, dark spiders running across floors or walls can indicate their presence.
  • Egg Sacs: Finding egg sacs in secluded areas, which contain multiple spiderlings ready to hatch, can exacerbate an infestation.
  • Insect Activity: An increase in other insect populations can attract more spiders, indirectly indicating a potential spider problem.

Prevention Tips

Seal Entry Points: Inspect the building for gaps, cracks, and holes in the exterior walls that pests can use to enter.

Keep Food Secure: Store food in airtight containers, and clean up spills and crumbs immediately. Don’t leave pet food out overnight.

Eliminate Clutter: Pests thrive in cluttered environments where they can find hiding spots and nesting materials. Keep areas tidy, especially basements, attics, and storage rooms.

Maintain Landscaping: Trim back trees, shrubs, and dead plant matter that touch your building, as these can provide pathways for pests to enter. Keep firewood and debris away from your building.
